Arts
Prep to Six
In
the Arts, students learn ways of experiencing ideas, emotions, values
and cultural beliefs. They learn to take risks, be imaginative,
question existing values, explore alternative solutions, engage in arts
criticism and develop, practise, and refine techniques and share
opinions.
The Arts Key Learning Area is made up of five main strands
Dance, Drama, Media, Music and Visual Arts
These strands are further divided into three aspects:
1. Creating, Making and Presenting
This involves children exploring and developing their own ideas, using
and mastering new skills and techniques and presenting their work to
their peers.
2. Arts Criticism and Aesthetics
Children look at their own work and the work of well-known artists in all strands and offer positive comment and encouragement
3. Past and Present Context
Children discuss and compare the different types of arts experiences
they have participated in, and would like to be involved in. We look
at, and compare, The Arts in history and The Arts in the modern day.
There is also a curriculum focus and outcomes to be addressed for each
strand of each level. The Arts program at Wales Street is integrated
into the curriculum and units undertaken by each area.
An important part of The Arts at Wales Street is an exhibition of
student works in second term and a whole school performance, which
involves a musical or a school concert in alternate years. This is a
great opportunity for all the children to showcase their talents in
this curriculum area.
Above all, Wales Street wishes to make The Arts enjoyable and
successful for all students and teachers. The Arts program aims to
foster creativity, develop positive self-esteem, encourage teamwork,
awareness of others, leadership and pride in themselves, their peers
and their school.
