Inschool Programs
Prep Mates
During
the first week of school all our preps are matched with a grade 5 or 6
mate. This gives the children an opportunity to work with and develop a
positive friendship and relationship with an older student and
encourages a caring and supportive environment for our preps. It also
helps develop confidence and independence in our preps, as well as our
grade 5/6's.
This is a valuable and rewarding program for all involved. It helps
with the smooth transition of our preps and gives them confidence and
support in the yard.
Our grade 5/6 mates are involved with our preps in a variety of ways including -
- Literacy/Numeracy/Integrated group work
- Eating lunch/playlunch together
- Reading stories
- Visiting the school library
- Playing safely in the yard
- Developing positive friendships
- School walks and visiting classrooms
Peer Support
This program has been running successfully for several years and involves children in the 3-6 area. All children in Grade 6 are trained as Peer Support Leaders to develop their leadership skills and enhance self-development. The children who are chosen to be leaders work with a group of Grade 3 children on a weekly basis. They organise and run sessions involving discussions, games and activities designed to explore people and self intelligence. Peer Support provides the Grade 3 children with a supportive environment in which to develop their self confidence and individuality; consequently children can acquire the strength and resilience to resist harmful peer pressure.
Peer Mediation
The
key elements of this program are promoting communication, problem
solving and personal responsibility. Children in grade 5 take part in
a 2 day peer mediation training program. At the end of the training,
children may choose to become a peer mediator.
Peer Mediators work in pairs during recess and lunch breaks and help
student from Prep to year 6 solve minor issues experienced in the
playground. The main role of the mediators is to hear both sides of
the dispute, to encourage communication and help the disputants to see
each other's point of view.
A successful mediation occurs when both parties come to an agreement
using problem solving strategies discussed during the mediation
session. The program is designed to empower both the mediators and the
disputants.
