Music

A specialist music program for all grades is run throughout the year.  Each grade receives a weekly hour long lesson.

The two main strands in music comprise making music and responding to music.  Children are actively involved in listening, moving, singing, playing and creating.

Some samples of the types of music skills each grade level will be involved in are as follows-

Grade Prep
Children learn to keep the beat and explore patterns in words and music.  They sing a range of songs and learn to identify different sounds such as high/low, fast/slow, loud/soft.  Children explore ways of making sounds using their voices, body percussion and percussion instruments.

Grades One & Two
Children begin to create and perform short, simple vocal and instrumental pieces in front of the grade.  Children learn to identify changes in sounds, eg. Getting louder/softer, getting higher/lower.  The difference between rhythm and beat is explored and children begin to learn and use a small range of symbols to represent sounds.

Grades Three & Four
Children begin to use both percussion instruments and simple tuned instruments to create their own short works of music.  They continue to learn to use and write conventional and unconventional symbols to represent sounds of different pitch and duration.  During singing, children are encouraged to use a natural voice to achieve accuracy in pitch and rhythm and phrasing.  Singing may include partner songs and rounds.

Grades Five & Six
Children investigate qualities of music such as melodic shape, repeated patterns, structure and texture and experiment with combining and changing different sounds.  In singing, children learn songs from a range of cultures and are encouraged to use expressive voices and correct breath control.  Children are expected to perform a range of musical works and are encouraged to evaluate the effectiveness of their performance.

Choir
Children are invited to join our choir each year. They meet once a week (usually lunchtimes) to practice, and perform at various events throughout the year.

Extra Music Classes
Extra musical tuition is provided within Wales Street by various organizations and individuals.  These classes are on a user pays basis.  Instruments currently offered are: violin, keyboard, recorder, guitar and vocals.
