Parent Information
Pupil Absences
If
your child is absent from school for all or part of the day, please
send a note of explanation to your child's teacher, or ring the
school. This is a legal obligation.
Please do not send your child if he/she is not well.
Early Dismissal
If you need to collect your child from school at an earlier time, please go to the office first and sign the Early Dismissal Book. You will be given a yellow slip of paper to take to your child's teacher. If someone other than the persons listed as parent/guardians or emergency contacts on your child's enrolment form is to pick your child up early - please contact the office to advise of this. Please note that as the office is closed during lunch time, parents who need to collect their child/ren early need to do so before 1:30pm or after 2:30pm. Thank You.
Classroom/School Requirements
Your child will need the following things for their Prep year:-
- Art Smock
- Library Bag (Each year the Dept of Education supply each
family with an information kit. Your child can use the cloth bag
containing the information as their library bag)
- Your child's name on ALL belongings which could be misplaced or lost
- A reasonable amount of lunch and a snack for morning recess
- Sensible shoes and clothing suitable for the weather; no thongs please
- A school uniform is available
- Sun Hat

Parent/Teacher Meetings
Early
in the year parents will be invited to an information evening where
teachers will outline the teaching/learning program for children in
their grade.
Interviews will be held for all children mid year. At this interview
the class teacher will discuss your child's progress. Written reports
will be sent home mid year and at the end of the year. If you wish to
talk to the teacher about your child's progress at any other time,
please arrange a suitable time.
Sick Children
If
your child becomes ill during the school day, they will be taken to the
school sick bay. At this time you will be contacted to come and take
your child home. IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that we have an emergency
contact number. If we cannot contact you personally, we require an
alternative person that you nominate, who is able to collect your child
in your absence.
If you have shared custody, you need to notify us in writing of the
arrangements to be made if your child becomes ill during the
day. PLEASE do not send you child to school if they are unwell. We do
not have the facilities or personnel to cope with sick children.
When you arrive to collect your sick child, please go to the office and
sign the early dismissal book before taking your child home. The sick
bay is opposite the General Office.
Change of Family Details
If you change your address, telephone number or emergency contact details during the year, it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you let us know. Please put the changes in writing and send them to the office.
Medication
Some
children attending school need medication to manage illnesses such as
asthma. Before medication can be given, parents need to consult with
the grade teacher and then assist the teacher by supplying medication
in a container which states the name of the child, the dose, and the
time the medication is to be given. Parents also need to give written
authority for staff to administer medication. Children who have asthma
require an asthma management plan. Please obtain a form from the
office.
To avoid confusion, and for safety reasons, medication should be
clearly labelled, otherwise for safety reasons it will not be
administered.
Newsletter
Our newsletter is available online or can be emailed to you.
Notices
If you require notices to be sent to more than one household, please let your child's teacher know. The names and addresses of the recipients should be listed in writing and left with the classroom teacher. Again, if these details change we need to know as soon as possible.
Lost Property
This is a problem at school as much of it is never claimed. Children's belongings and items of clothing should be labelled clearly with the child's name. If your child loses something check the pegs outside the classroom and the lost property box in the office building beside the stairs or in the East wing.
Money Collection
During the year the teacher will be collecting money for excursions, book club, special events etc. It is essential that you use a separate envelope for each payment and write your child's name, room number (or teachers name) and the purpose of the collection on the outside. Enclosing the correct amount is important, however if change is required, it will be sent home in a small gold envelope with your child. For excursions, it is essential that you use the collection/permission envelope provided. Please note that the office does not keep change.
Excursions and Special Events
Excursions
and special events are an important part of the school
program. Teachers carefully plan the introductory and follow up
lessons. Please support these activities.
No child can be taken on an excursion unless a parent's signed approval
form has been given to the teacher. Please return forms and money as
early as possible. We do however ask you to sign a "local excursion
form" which covers local excursions (within walking distance to the
school) where no cost is incurred.
Yard Duty
There are always teachers in the yard before school from 8:45am, at recess and lunch time, and after school until 3:45pm, to supervise the children. Occasionally, as in any play situation, accidents occur. Any superficial injuries will be attended to by the school nurse. You will be contacted if any serious injury occurs.
Access to School Grounds/ Visitor Passes
From 9:15am to 3:15pm all gates except the one immediately outside of the office in Speight Street are locked. Visitors during school hours MUST visit the office first and obtain a Visitors Pass. This makes it easy for staff and students to identify visitors to our school.
Wet Weather
On wet days and extremely hot days, children remain in the classroom during recesses. Teachers share the supervision of the children in the classroom.
Head Lice
Head
lice are tiny unwelcome insects, which enjoy living in people's
hair. Head lice rapidly spread from person to person and for this
reason we urge you to check your child's hair on a weekly basis.
At Wales Street Primary, we encourage our families to use the
conditioner and comb method of detecting head lice. Instructions can
be obtained from the school nurse or the office.
If you find lice in your child's hair, you must treat them and
eradicate the live lice before your child can return to school. When
eradicating lice, only infected members of the family need to be
treated. Could you please also notify the school so that we can alert
our other families.
Below is a brochure developed by the 'Lousy Nit Committee'. There are
also some very useful websites dedicated to the subject of head
lice. See Below
