Peer Support
Peer Support and the Alternative Program form an essential
part of delivering additional social education to our students.
The Peer Support Program involves Grade 6
children leading Grade 3 children in a sereies of structured lessons
involving elements of social development and awareness such as :
Friendship, Trust, Peer Pressure .
The Alternative Program is a teacher lead social skills program which
responds to issues the children have identified in our annual survey :
Feelings about myself and my School. This year some of the topics
coverd were:co operation, peacefulness, rumours and bullying.
All Grade Six students undergo Peer Support Leadership Training early
in Term 1. They spend a day and a half exploring the demands of
leadership, how leadership differs from friendship and the need for
integrity and respect for confidentiality in their dealings with
others. We achieve this through a series of games, discussions, role
plays and simulations which illustrate the points being highlighted.
The children have a clear undrestanding of the demands of the role and
the expectations of the team leaders. On completion of the program
students have the opportunity to nominate as potential leaders. Small
groups of 3-4 Grade 6 children are then matched to small groups of
Grade 3 children. The older children mentor and teach the younger
students through a series of structured lessons.
The program provides both groups of children with the opportunity to
develop their social skills and awareness in a supportive and nurturing
environment.
