Performing Arts Program
At Wales Street Primary School, the Performing Arts program engages students from Foundation to Grade Six in developing a broad range of skills in Music, Drama, and Dance. Across their seven years, students build confidence, enhance social and communication abilities, and deepen their understanding of performance arts through hands-on, creative experiences.
Our program nurtures creativity, imagination, and self-assurance, with students exploring dramatic elements, stagecraft, puppetry, percussion, and dance movement. They also develop an appreciation for live performance, participating in events that include professional lighting, sound systems, props, and costumes.
The Performing Arts curriculum is thoughtfully designed to align with both the PYP framework and the Victorian Curriculum standards. Students explore diverse and culturally connected topics, fostering inquiry-based learning and a global perspective.
Every second year, students take part in a whole-school production, creating a dynamic, immersive performance experience. This year, students will bring The Wizard of Oz to life on stage. In non-production years, the program places a strong emphasis on music, with a semester-long focus tailored to different year levels:
- Foundation, Grade 1, and Grade 2 students develop rhythm and coordination through percussion instruments.
- Grade 3 and 4 students learn to play the recorder, building foundational music reading skills.
- Grade 5 students progress to learning the ukulele, exploring chords and melody.
Through this comprehensive program, students at Wales Street Primary School are inspired to discover their creative potential and thrive in the performing arts.
