Our school

Since our school gates first opened in 1891, Wales Street Primary School has thrived as a central part of the Northcote and Thornbury community that we call home. As an accredited IB school, we’re here to help our students achieve their very best, and to help foster a love of life-long learning.

FROM OUR PRINCIPAL

Welcome to Wales Street Primary School!

Thank you for your interest in Wales Street Primary School. My name is Robyn Owens, and I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the very proud Principal of Wales Street Primary School.

As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School we provide an international education to all students from Foundation to Year 6. Through purposeful inquiry, we strive to develop students who are knowledgeable, intelligent, open-minded and caring, and are encouraged to develop their innate sense of curiosity and wonderment. We hope that, as truly internationally minded young people possessing these attributes, our students will take positive action in the world.

At the core of our educational philosophy is the belief that learning flourishes when students feel supported, safe, and empowered. Prioritising wellbeing means creating an environment where every child can thrive emotionally, socially, and academically. Through programs, resources, and daily interactions, we aim to build a culture of care that nurtures self-awareness, resilience, and a sense of belonging.

Our philosophy also reflects an inquiry-based approach to learning through developing conceptualised understanding of all areas of the curriculum. This approach is underpinned by the explicit teaching of skills and concepts that allow students to apply their learning within, and through the curriculum. We have a significant focus on the teaching of reading, writing and mathematics where students deepen their knowledge as they progress throughout the school Years.

Wales Street Primary School Values of Respect, Responsibility and Kindness, underpin how we, as a community of learners interact and care for one another. The many extra-curricular and leadership opportunities provided to our students helps create an engaging and interesting environment that promotes student voice and agency.

We pride ourselves on working with our school community. Our Parents are valued for their support and involvement in our curriculum programs, school activities and membership of groups such as School Council, School Council sub-committees and Wales Street Social.  We welcome your support of the school, as your involvement will strengthen the links between home and school and enhance the educational achievements of our students.

I am privileged to lead an amazing team of dedicated teachers and staff who are committed to providing a nurturing, inclusive, safe and stimulating learning environment where every student can thrive and reach their full potential.

I invite you to come and visit our wonderful school. Please don’t hesitate to contact us should you have any further queries on (03) 9484 3949.
